  • Pretreatment with catecholamines can suppress severe ventricular arrhythmias in rats: RESULTS (part 1)

Isolated heart preparation: In the control group, regional ischemia elicited a high incidence of severe ventricular arrhythmias including PVCs, VT and VF. VT and VF occurred in 87% and 73% of hearts, respectively, between 10 and 20 mins of ischemia (Figure 1). The total number of PVCs was 542±84. In contrast, in the noradrenaline-treated group, only 44% of hearts exhibited VT, VF occurred in 11% of hearts (P<0.05), and total PVCs were significantly reduced to 25±11 (P<0.01). In addition, the duration of both VT and VF was significantly decreased after noradrenaline treatment to 4.5±2 and 96±24 s versus 82±30 and 216±24 s, respectively, in controls (Figure 2).
