In the present paper, two different aspects of research aimed at further understanding the role of nitric oxide in cardiovascular protection are summarized. First, the level of nitric oxide and some iron-nitric oxide adducts were investigated in the myocardium during ischemia and under the influence of LPS, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. This method affords the unique possibility to monitor directly generation of nitric oxide and its ad-ducts in the tissue.
